Connecting the camera, in device manger, I see:
CL Devices\PS3Eye Camera

Running CL-Eye Test, the led become red (seems blinking fast), but the window remain black.
(in Options, Preview is marked)

I also tried Ekiga http://ekiga.org/, same results, preview is black.

Whats wrong?

Does the CL-EyeTest.exe work and display the camera image normally?

What if your PC specs? Are you using USB 2.0 port on your computer?

no, the motherboard has only USB1.1 ports. WinXP say “the device can work at increased speed…” message

The PS3Eye camera requires USB 2.0 port to work. It will not work on USB 1.0/1.1 port.

I haven’t found this requirements anywhere so this confused me.

You are right:
640x480 = 307’200 pixel
60 Hz => 18’432’000 pixel/s
32 bit/pixel => 589’824’000 bit/s = 589 Mbps

320x240 = 76’800 pixel
120 Hz => 9’216’000 pixel/s
32 bit/pixel => 294’912’000 bit/s = 294 Mbps

Audio: 16bit
48 kHz => 768’000 bit/s = 0.768 Mbps

Minimum TOT:
294.768 Mbps minimum

USB1.1 is 12 Mbps “Full-Bandwidth” (effective throughput up to ? Mbps)
USB2.0 is 480 Mbps (effective throughput up to 280 Mbps) now called “Hi-Speed”

I’m not sure but the 1.1 throughput can be estimated as 7 Mbps,
so can work only lowering the bit/pixel color dept, AND the frame speed, no audio.
For example:
12 Hz => 921’600 pixel/s
8 bit/pixel => 7’372’800 bit/s = 7.3 Mbps

What is the color dept in bit/pixel of the PS3E? I cannot find nowhere on specifications.
Are there some HW image compression inside the camera?

The PS3Eye camera sends data in sensor native format which is 8bits per pixel.
Therefore we are able to achieve high transfer frame rates without exceeding the USB 2.0 bandwidth.

if you slow down the frame rate below 12 Hz, can work with USB1.1 too:

Reduced frame rate:
————————————
12 Hz => 921’600 pixel/s
8 bit/pixel => 7’372’800 bit/s = 7.3 Mbps

Nominal frame rate:
———————————-
640x480 = 307’200 pixel
60 Hz => 18’432’000 pixel/s
8 bit/pixel => 147’456’000 bit/s = 147 Mbps

320x240 = 76’800 pixel
120 Hz => 9’216’000 pixel/s
8 bit/pixel => 73’728’000 bit/s = 73.7 Mbps

Audio: 16bit
48 kHz => 768’000 bit/s = 0.768 Mbps

Minimum TOT with nominal rate:
74.468 Mbps minimum

Increased frame rate:
——————————-
640x480 = 307’200 pixel
75 Hz => 23’040’000 pixel/s
8 bit/pixel => 184’320’000 bit/s = 184 Mbps

320x240 = 76’800 pixel
187 Hz => 14’361’600 pixel/s
8 bit/pixel => 114’892’800 bit/s = 114.8 Mbps

I buyed a new 4xUSB2.0 card with VIA chipset.
The card work well with the PS3eye webcam, and the Test software.
I had to reduce the frame rate to 25 fps, because of the PC is old/slow, but now work.
Thank you.
